Great video but

This a good piece of equipment for the price but I found that the
audio quality when playing a cd was very poor. Blue ray and DVD
play well with good sound.

Being a loyal follower of Sony I bought this player as an upgrade
from the Sony BDP-S350-bluray player that I got free with my telly
4 years ago. There are one or two good points:- blu-ray discs start
up much quicker and there is a definite improvement in the sound
quality. However, there is no discernable improvement in picture
quality and the movement handling is defintely worse. However, this
might be due to the fact that I cannot use the high-quality,
shielded, mains lead I used with the 350 as Sony, in their wisdom,
use a permanently attached mains lead-this might be due to EU
legislation but, whatever the reason, I believe it is a retrograde
step. I am unable to cut off this fixed lead as it would invalidate
the guarantee but as soon as this expires that is what I shall do
and replace it with the better lead. Overall disappointing.
Very reliable, frequent updates, just works.
Out of all the Blu-Ray players, and there have been a few come and
gone, the Sony players seem to be the best, i've had Samsung and LG
as well and Sony have fewer errors, fewer weirdnesses, regular
updates and usefull smart tv features.
They are by no means perfect, but stand out as being better.
The only downside to this box is that its shaped like an off centre
diamond, a jewel like cut to the top of the case. This means its
not level so nothing can sit on top and be flat.
That aside, it does look wonderful if you can spare it some
Useful feature not on all players is the ability to eject discs
from the remote, great if a 3D disc doesn't want to be recognised
as a 3D disc, which happens rarely but it saves you having to
scramble to the player again and you can eject a disc and have it
ready to swap by the time you get up which is handy.
If you pause the unit and it goes into standby, hitting play will
start it off from where it stopped, not loosing your place.
On some TVs it will even power up/down the TV via the HDMI lead if
its compatible (It did this on my Panasonic, imagine it does on a

The 3100 with WiFi only cost about 16 more than the 4100 without
WiFi, and although I am a very hard guy to please, I am really
chuffed with this bit of kit. It does exactly as it says in the
advertising blurb, it is a piece of cake to set up and boy does it
perform. I have recently moved to Plusnet from BT and was
half-expecting some router/wifi problems, but both Plusnet and SONY
have come out brilliantly. The whingers here have been rabbiting on
about a lack of an HDMI lead to connect the 3100 to a television,
but that of course could have increased the price for those who
already have HDMI cables - yes, it needs an HDMI cable; I bought
one when I bought my SHARP television from John Lewis, and AFAIAC
SONY made the right decision to keep the price down by not
In fact, I am over the moon with this purchase - the 3100 is a
small and very neat player and I have been able to leave my
existing SHARP VHS/DVD Combi recorder/player attached to my tv with
a SCART cable and have the SONY connected with an HDMI cable - no
problems at all, which has delighted me enormously. I am also a bit
of a YouTube addict, but my backside begrudges sitting on a
computer chair for too long - well, now I can watch all my YouTube
clips on my tv, thanks to this little beauty. No more computer
screen viewing of the tv programmes I have missed - now I can just
watch them on the BBC & ITV I-Players on my tv screen. And of
course my DVD collection has far superior reproduction on this
Blu-ray player and the player controls are increased and are far
better, with no more adjustment required for picture aspect or
size, the 3100 handles it automatically. For under 90 delivered to
your door, this player is excellent value for money.
My only criticism is with myself - I have had this player in a
Wishlist for months, pondering on whether to buy it and would it
live up to my expectations of it - I should have bought it months
A great player - excellent value

We bought this as a secondary BluRay because we had films from
different regions. It is very small but incredibly mighty. The
picture is great, navigability fab and the wifi was easily set up.
I actually prefer it to the Panasonic Home theatre system we had
bought and mainly just use that for surround sound and the
alternate Region BluRays

You usually cant be disappointed if you default to a SONY product
and this is no exception - yes I have replaced a SONY DVD player
that was ten years old but there you are (this stuff tends to last)
- obvious changes due to modern day production optimisation, value
engineering and general robustness - but what do you expect in this
modern throw away world ?
Picture quality is very - very good - now need a new telly and a
sound bar though -------- dammn
Lacks a number of things
Geebis (10 Nov
It get 3 stars due to its lack of a Optical Digital connection,
without this connection it is difficult to connect to an older home
cinema system that does not have a HMDI connections without using a
converter of some sort costing another 60+.
Picture quality is good although somewhat forced and can appear
over sharpened and colour saturated.
Wifi connection was easy and without fuss..... Menu is simple and
easy to use.
Hand controller seems to operate my other Sony equipment which some
may like but it can be a problem when you wish to control just the
player and you end up turning everything off!
Internet connection is smooth a without dropout and works well and
is worth the money just for this although it does not offer all the
play back channels.
Good player let down by plastic case

Features of this player are great and as advertised but let down by
easily scratched plastic case. May not have purchased if known case

Does what I expected and needed...and more-LOL, doubt I'll ever use
half of what it makes available. Basically made my non-smart TV
smart. Built in WiFi works well. The picture is fantastic. Highly
Should NOT be advertised as Multi-Region imo
Podcentral (3 Nov
To cut to the chase - the player itself is brilliant, 4-5 stars, no
What i have issue with is Amazon advertising this as DVD
multi-region (i know that doesn't apply to the blu-ray).
It turns out that this isn't multi-region out of the box and that
in order to make it so you have to purchase a separate magic remote
control (ONE FOR ALL URC-7950) which currently costs an extra
So i am miffed at Amazon, not sony, and am only giving it 3 stars
as a result as it is going to cost me much more than originally
